A "genuine student" or credibility interview exists for one reason: the visa officer wants to confirm that your primary intention is to study, and that you have a realistic, well-thought-out plan for doing so. Here's how our counselors prepare clients before every interview.
Know Your Course Better Than Your CV
You should be able to explain, in your own words, why you picked this specific course — not just the university's name recognition. Officers often ask about specific modules, the structure of the program, or why you didn't choose a similar course available in your home country. If you can't answer that comfortably, it signals the course was chosen for the wrong reasons.
Connect the Course to a Real Career Outcome
Avoid vague answers like "it will help my career." Be specific: what job title or industry are you targeting when you return, and how does this exact qualification get you there? If you're switching fields entirely, be ready to explain that transition logically — officers are trained to notice answers that sound memorized rather than genuinely thought through.
Be Honest About Your Finances
You should know, without hesitation, who is funding your studies, roughly how much the full program will cost, and how that money was earned or saved. If a sponsor is involved, know their occupation and relationship to you clearly. Vague or inconsistent financial answers are one of the most common reasons genuine applicants still face refusal.
Show Ties to Home — Without Overexplaining
You don't need a long speech about "definitely returning home." A calm, factual answer about your family, any property, or a career path waiting for you back home is usually enough. Over-rehearsed answers here often come across as less credible than short, honest ones.
Practice Speaking, Not Memorizing
The biggest mistake we see is students memorizing paragraph-length answers. Interviewers are trained to spot this immediately — it usually shows in unnatural pauses or overly polished phrasing. Instead, practice the ideas conversationally with a mock interviewer (we run these free for every client) so your real personality comes through.
