Test Format
IELTS Academic is a mix of computer-delivered and paper-based options, with a face-to-face (or video-call) Speaking test with a real examiner. PTE Academic is fully computer-based, including the Speaking section, which is recorded and scored by AI-assisted marking. If you feel more comfortable speaking to a person than into a microphone alone, IELTS may suit you better — and vice versa.
Results Turnaround
This is where PTE has a clear edge: results are typically available within 48 hours, compared to IELTS' standard 3–13 days (faster for the computer-delivered version). If you're applying close to an intake deadline, PTE's speed can be a genuine advantage.
Scoring Style
PTE's AI scoring rewards clear, well-paced, grammatically accurate responses delivered at a steady rhythm — hesitation or long pauses can cost marks even if the content is strong. IELTS' human examiners tend to give more credit for natural conversational flow, even with occasional pauses, as long as the ideas are well communicated.
University & Visa Acceptance
Both are accepted by the UK, Australia, Canada and most of Europe for both study and immigration purposes. A small number of universities or specific professional-body certifications still list IELTS only — always confirm with your target university's official requirements before booking either test.
